LESSON PLAN

Class: I                                                                 Class strength: 10

Subject: English                                                   Time: 50 minutes

Topic: Personal Information

Teaching Learning Materials: Puppets, dialogue chart, a colleague for demonstration

Previous Knowledge of the pupils: Children know the name of their family members.

Lesson Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the child will be able to:

i.         Give his/her personal information correctly.

ii.       Ask for other’s personal information independently after the demonstration.

Lesson Introduction: (5 minutes)

Greeting: Good morning children, how are you today?

Gaining attention: (Teacher claps hand.) Okay, keep your pencil on the table, sit straight and listen to me.

Instruction: Before we start our today’s lesson, I want to ask you a few questions, if you know the answer, please raise your hand.

i.         What is your name?

ii.       How old are you?

iii.      Can you tell more about yourself? (Children can tell their name, age, sex...)

So today we will learn how to ask and give information about ourselves. (Teacher explains the topic and writes the topic on the board).

 Lesson Development: (1+4+3+2=10 minutes)

Gaining attention: Teacher will clap the hands to get the children’s’ attention.

Instruction: To learn about this topic, I have requested my friend Mr. Dorji in our class. We will show/demonstrate how to ask and give personal information. Please look at us and listen carefully, later on you are going to practise as we have demonstrated with your friend. Is that clear?

(Teacher demonstrates the dialogue with his friend).

Example: Teacher’s Activity I. (4 minutes)

Teacher: Hello, how are you?

Mr. Dorji: I am fine, thank you. How are you?

Teacher: I am fine, thank you. What is your name?

Mr. Dorji: My name is Dorji.

Teacher: How old are you?

Mr Dorji: I am 24 years old.

Teacher: How many brothers do you have?

Mr. Dorji: I have one brother.

Teacher: How many sisters do you have?

Mr. Dorji: I have two sisters.

Teacher: where do you live?

Mr. Dorji: I live in Thimphu.

After that Mr. Dorji will take turn to ask questions and the teacher will answer to him. Once the demonstration is completed teacher will thank Mr. Dorji and he will leave the class.

Teacher’s Activity II. (3 minutes)

Teacher will paste the demonstrated dialogue chart on the board and read with the children. This will help weaker children to carry out the activity on their own.

Teacher’s Activity III. (2 minutes)

Next teacher uses the puppets and demonstrates the dialogues once again referring the chart.

Student activity I: (10 minutes)

Children will practise the dialogues in pair as demonstrated by the teacher.

Activity Direction: I will divide you in A/B pairs (teacher divides in AB pairs). You must sit with your partner and practice how to give and get information about yourself and your friend. First student A will ask question and student B will answer the questions. After that student B will take turn to ask questions. If you do not remember the questions, look at the chart and continue practicing. Is that clear?

Checking the understanding: Can anyone of you repeat what I have said to you?            

Monitoring activity:

Teacher will walk around to ensure that all the children are actively engaged in doing the activity. Teacher will help and encourage the weaker ones, at the same time provide feed backs and appreciate those who are doing well.

Activity II: (15 minutes)

Gaining attention: Stand up children. Stretch your body and listen to me.

Activity directions: In this activity we are going to learn more about personal information through a game. This game is called bean bag, this is the bean bag. (Teacher shows the bag which is made of clothe piece, stitched and filled with bean seeds). To play this game you all should be in circle. Children come here and make a circle. (Teacher makes the students to stand in circle in front of the class and gives further instructions). Now one of you will throw the bag to your friend and ask any question that you wish to ask, and the one who catches the bag will answer the question. Then throw the bag again to any of your friend. This will go on until everyone gets chance to question and answer. You are not allowed to refer the chart. (Teacher will put down the chart as it will provide children an opportunity to ask questions beyond what is written in the chart).You will get 15 minutes to carry out this activity.

Example: Teacher will create a situation where all the children will get a chance to ask about their friend’s family members and the work each member do, and their likes and dislikes.

Check their understanding: Is that clear, children?  Let two children repeat the instruction. (Select randomly to repeat the instruction)

Follow up activity: (5 minutes)

Teacher calls a pair of children to volunteer and demonstrates the dialogues to the class. If the students make mistakes, teacher will provide necessary feedback.

     Lesson closure: (5 minutes)

Teacher will randomly ask questions to a few students to share their personal information to the whole class.

After that teacher will briefly summarize and end the lesson.
